Name: Gulden Balabekova
Course Studied: MSc IT
Studied at: Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Ireland
First of all, let me introduce myself. I am Gulden and from the Republic of Kazakhstan. I did my Master’s degree at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) in Ireland.
Ireland is the first place I have ever travelled. So, you can imagine how I felt! But now I love it very much because Ireland is one of the safest countries in the world. In Ireland people are very friendly, and it is not difficult to find direction as everyone asks you if you need help.
In addition, living in a host family helps you to adapt and learn more about their culture. I was surprised when I was told that the Irish people like drinking tea a lot and there were many children in a family in the past, just like in a Kazakh family. Between 1845 and 1852 the Irish people survived famine so did the Kazakh people in the 1930s. I found many similarities between our countries.
To conclude there are no reasons to be afraid! You will love Ireland!
Another concern of the students is the language. You might think how will I study in a foreign language, how will I succeed in my degree and so on.
No worries! Free English courses for academic purposes are organised for DIT students, and you can attend a class in your spare time. Moreover, in DIT you can also study another foreign language like Spanish. You will get maths support as well.
To sum up there is nothing to be afraid! Take advantage of the support!
The most important question that matters all the students is - why DIT? Here are some reasons.
DIT meets the needs of the students and employers. It has a range of student services and societies, for example Career Services and Shotakan Karate Society.
DIT teachers are highly-qualified. They bring the experience gained from working in different areas over 10-30 years.
The lecturers and other staff are polite and they do not leave you alone with your problems. The International Office organises the events that make the students feel at home.
DIT has been named as one of the world’s top 100 higher education institutions under the age of 50 in the prestigious Times Higher Education “100 under 50” 2014 league table.
Finally, DIT provides its students with an excellent opportunity to develop their personal and professional skills.
